5 Signs Your Vineyard Tractor Needs a Service Before Vintage
Vintage is the worst possible time for your tractor to go down. You're running long days, the machinery is under load, and a breakdown doesn't just cost you a repair bill — it costs you time you don't have. The good news is that most vintage breakdowns are preventable. Here are five signs your tractor is telling you it needs attention before the season starts.
1. You can't remember the last service
If you're not sure when it was last serviced, it's overdue. Vineyard tractors work hard across a long season — spray runs, mowing, tipping, pulling implements through headlands. Engine oil degrades, filters clog, and wear accumulates. A pre-season service isn't just changing the oil — it's a full check of systems that can fail under vintage load.
2. There's a hydraulic leak, even a small one
A slow hydraulic leak that's been sitting on the back burner all year will not hold through vintage. Hydraulic systems are under sustained pressure during harvest operations and a minor leak becomes a failure fast. If you're topping up the hydraulic fluid more than you should be, get it looked at before February.
3. The electrical system is playing up
Intermittent warning lights, sensors cutting in and out, lighting faults — electrical gremlins have a habit of becoming full failures when the machine is under load. Modern tractors rely heavily on electronic management systems, and a fault that seems minor in off-season can shut the machine down mid-operation during vintage.
4. The brakes feel soft or uneven
Vineyard terrain is uneven and tractors on slopes with loaded trailers need reliable brakes. Soft pedal feel, pulling to one side, or longer stopping distances are all signs the brake system needs attention. This is both a safety issue and a reliability one — don't carry it into a busy vintage.
5. You're carrying a known issue into the season
If there's something you've been meaning to get fixed — a noise, a vibration, a function that's not quite right — vintage is not the time to find out what it was. Known issues rarely resolve themselves and almost always get worse under load.
